Providing year round sports training and athletic competition to more than
3.1 million people with intellectual disabilities in more than 180 countries

Special Olympics Africa > Reflect

“The great athletes of yesterday and today, and the athletes of Special Olympics, regardless of wins or losses, share a work ethic, a dignity, a fierceness, and a love for the game that transcends any meaningless comparison between ability and disability. Greatness is measured by the heart, the courage, and the tenacity with which you play the game and live your life. The Special Olympics athletes, whom I have had the remarkable privilege of photographing, continuously celebrate a spirit that says I am proud, I am smart, I am strong, I am able, I am…”

Richard Corman, Photographer

Over the past 40 years, Special Olympics has created a legacy. Yesterday Special Olympics hung a medal around an athletes’ neck. Today Special Olympics made a mother proud. And tomorrow an athlete will be born into a society where an intellectual disability is not a curse, but a gift. A society where Special Olympics athletes are celebrated.

Browse our media archive, Regional Newsletter (English / French), subscribe to our quarterly Spirit magazine, reflect on our milestones, marvel at our athletes and join the movement.
